Camp College for a Summer Weekend

This past weekend, CHAH high schoolers attended Camp College, a 3-day weekend where the kids lived in the residence halls from August 7-9 at SUNY - New Delhi.  They attended lectures by college professors and participated in workshops about admissions and financial aid.

11th grader Brittany Quezada said that "Camp college showed me how to get along with people from different cultures.  It showed me how to get out of my comfort zone."

Her friend, Jishanny Quintana, added that Camp College taught her that in college, "passion and motivation are the keys to success and happiness."

The students learned about interviewing for colleges and attended a workshop on personal statement writing techniques. 

It was a fun, informative, and entertaining weekend.  Soon, college will be more than a long weekend...it will be their life!

A Red Carpeted Hollywood Nights for 8th Grade Prom!

The 8th grade prom was held Wednesday, June 17 at the catering hall Maestros in the Bronx.  This year's theme was "Hollywood Nights" and our soon-to-be-high-schoolers certainly dressed and danced the part!

CHAH Girl's Volleyball Team vs. NYPD

The CHAH Phoenix Girl's Volleyball team, along with the Gregorio Luperson Girl's Volleyball Team, played against members of the NYPD's 33rd Police Precinct and participated in their 4th Annual community tournament.

Aside from the fun friendly competition, Officer Matos encouraged our young people to stop the violence, be kind to one another, be socially responsible, and get engaged in the community by volunteering and giving back.

Maria Velez, Janice Jimenez, Andrelyn Reyes, Stephany Vazquez, Yocasta Fanas, Stacey Peguero, Jazmin Fernandez found Officer Matos' words really encouraging.

It was a fun day filled with community spirit!

Mexican Creation Legends in Spanish Class

9th and 10th grade students in Ms. Svenson's Spanish 2 class finished up the school year by studying Mexican legends and creating their own. We learned that legends often tell a creation story, so students developed a creation story of their own, utilizing the unit vocabulary as well as the preterite and imperfect tenses.

The following legends, written in Spanish, show the amazing creativity and command of Spanish that the students have developed over the course of the year. We hope you enjoy reading some of the interesting legends that our students wrote!

"La creación de la grama verde"

Emmanuel M., 9th grade

Hace muchos siglos en la tierra no había la grama verde. La montaña y el mar estaban tristes porque el sol era egoísta y no quería compartir. Un día, la montaña estaba preparándose para el festival, y la grama amarilla estaba triste porque el mar le daba agua pero no crecía. La montaña dijo, "Llama al sol y pregúntale por qué no hay sol en la tierra." 

Ring ring

"Sol"

"¿Sí, grama?"

"¿Por qué no hay sol aquí?" dijo la grama.

"Yo no voy para la isla muy lejos."

El próximo día el sol pasó y no dio luz. Entonces, la montaña y el mar se pusieron bravos. La montaña, el mar, y la grama amarilla estaban tristes porque el so no le daba luz a la grama. 

Un día la grama se estaba muriendo. El mar le dijo al sol, "Vamos a trabajar juntos para tratar de ayudar a la grama amarilla." Pero la montaña estaba vieja porque tenía 31 años, y el mar se estaba secando porque tenía 32 años y no llovía porque el sol controlaba todo de lo que conectaba la tierra y el aire. 

Un día el mar, la grama, y la montaña trabajaron para destruir el sol. El mar subió a la montaña, y de repente subió hasta el sol. El sol y el agua estaban peleando pero era más fuerte que el sol. El sol se murió y llegó un nuevo, generoso sol en la tierra. La grama estaba alta, y había sol para todos. Toditos estaban felices y la montaña, el mar, y el sol estaban felices por la grama amarilla (¡ahora verde!).

"La creación de los árboles"

Devon C., 9th Grade

Hace muchos siglos no había árboles en el mundo. Había solamente semillas pequeñas y le tenían miedo al dios y al emperador en el agua y las nubes. El dios y el emperador eran grandes y les gustaba pelear. El emperador en el agua y el dios en las nubes mataban las semillas. Pero había una semilla que se llamaba Semilla que era pequeño pero no le tenía miedo al dios y al emperador. Sin embargo, estaba celoso del emperador y dios porque ellos eran ricos. 

Un día Semilla se entrenó porque él quería matar al dios y al emperador. Semilla caminó al mar para matar al emperador; por eso, el emperador mandó un tiburón para matar a Semilla, pero Semilla mató al tiburón. Después, Semilla mató al emperador y el emperador le dio un poder mágico. Todas las semillas se transformaron en plantas. Semilla subió la montaña para montar una nube para encontrar el templo de nubes en el cielo. Semilla mató al dios y el dios le dio otro poder mágico. Después, todas las semillas se transformaron en árboles. Desde ese día todas las semillas se transforman en árboles. Ahora el nuevo dios y emperador ayudan a los árboles.

"La creación de la niebla"

Jhazlee V., 10th grade

Hace mucho tiempo, había una pequeña aldea. Era una pobre aldea, con familias pobres. Era pobre porque nadie quería comerciar. Había una bruja siniestra, todos tenían miedo de encontrar a la bruja en el bosque cerca de la aldea. En la aldea, había una pequeña familia de panaderos. Una de las panaderas era una hermosa, Serenity. Ella tenía 19 años, ojos negros, y pelo cobrizo. Era simpática, inteligente, e inocente. Ella alimentaba a los pobres inclusive un muchacho, Alexander. Alexander tenía 18 años, ojos verdes, y pelo negro. Era alto, y un poco hermoso. Él le contaba chistes a Serenity todos los días. Ellos estaban enamorados.

Un día, la bruja infame vio a Serenity y Alexander juntos, y se volvió celosa de ellos. Por eso, ella le hizo un hechizo a Alexander (que detenía él de hablar). Cuando Alexander intentó hablar con Serenity, él exhaló niebla en vez de aire.

La aldea evitó a Alexander por su maldición. Alexander y Serenity fueron sin rumbo separados. Alexander decidió odiar a la bruja para vengarse. El exhalaba niebla en cualquier lugar donde ella iba. Por eso, otras aldeas empezaban a comerciar con la pequeña aldea. Ellos sabían evitar la niebla porque marcaba dónde la bruja estaba.

6th Graders Go Camping in Massachusetts!

This spring, the sixth grade had the chance to take two camping trips to the Manice Education Center in Florida, Massachusetts from May 11- May 13 and May 27- May 29.

Manice Education Center gives students from New York City the chance to bring the classroom outdoors and learn about the environment and explore nature with hands-on activities and team building exercises.

Educators from Manice visited our science classroom weekly, during a 7-week exploratory program that went from February through March. At the end of the program, students were invited to go on a 3-day camping trip to learn about ecology and wilderness survival.

Students went canoeing to learn about water safety.  They also learned about food waste and gardening, went hiking and engaged in many other activities with trained counselors and CHAH teachers. 

The trip has become a favorite of the sixth grade teachers and students and we were so happy to have the majority of students participate this year.  If a tree falls in the woods, maybe a CHAH student will be there to hear it!
