This past week, CHAH and our partner organization, CLOTH, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for our new medical clinic. The medical clinic will serve our students and their families right here in our school building. One parent wrote an article on Public School Proud, a UFT division aimed at celebrating all the good work our public schools are doing.

CHAH students got to see the hit show The Lion King this week at Minskoff Theatre on Broadway. The Lion King is the longest running Broadway show and the students could understand why. “It was amazing,” Manuel Irizarry said, “Something that I’ve never seen before. It was way better than the movie!”
His friend and baseball teammate Kevenz Gonzalez agreed. “It was remarkable to see the actor’s enthusiasm,” he said.
The field trip was organized by the CHAH dance teacher, Ms. Jacobson, who earned the funding by participating in a mentorship program for dance teachers through the NYC Department of Education. Ms. Jacobson worked closely with the music teacher, Ms. Calev, on a cross-curricular unit that culminated in the Broadway outing.
“This is why I became a teacher,” Ms. Jacobson said. “I’m happy that we got to offer our students an experience like this. I’m so glad they enjoyed it.”
And enjoy it they did. 10th Grader Emily Leon liked the play for the nostalgic feelings it gave her. “The performance brought me back to my childhood because it gave me good memories of the movie.”
Her friend, Kharina Cordero, got emotional. “It was so good that I cried,” she said. Then added, “In a good way.”
This past Saturday, CHAH students marched in the People's Climate March in our nation’s capital! CHAH students had an eventful and exciting full day trip to Washington DC, where they marched to raise awareness about climate change.
Students prepared for the event by learning about climate change in a series of articles and video clips in their ELA class, writing about what they have learned, and by investigating the advocacy of several youth activists.
They designed their own t-shirts with a group logo containing their self-selected group name, The CHAH Environmental Protectors, wrote a slogan representing their stance on climate change, and created a graphic design supporting their position.
Then on April 29th, the day of the People's Climate March, twenty CHAH students met at 5:45 in the morning to board a bus and head to our nation's capital to march for their cause. They enjoyed leading the other protesters in chants in Spanish and English. The 90-degree heat was brutal, but the organization that hosted them, The Food and Farm Justice Hub, kept everyone well hydrated and well fed at all times.
The march ended at the White House, and after some quick photo ops, we turned back around for the long bus ride back to New York City, arriving home at 10pm after a very long and exhausting, but fulfilling day.

This week, AFT Union President Randi Weingarten wrote an opinion piece in the Huffington Post. She cited CHAH as a shining example of why we should continue to support and fund public education. Thank you AFT and Randi Weingarten!

This week, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio stopped by CHAH for a quick press conference on affordable housing. Our partner organization, CLOTH, does a lot of great work on that front.
But before he left, the Mayor snapped a quick photo with the CHAH Boy's Baseball Team, who continue to swing for the fences.
