Career Day at CHAH

Last week was Career Day here at CHAH! Professionals from all sorts of industries and services came and spoke to the students for the morning. Each professional spoke to a classroom of students about their experiences and education for about twenty minutes.

Students were visited by an advertising salesperson, FDNY firefighters, a NYPD photographer, an accountant, a corrections officer (who graduated from CHAH!), a physical therapist, a judge, an information technology specialist, and a research scientist, among others.

Students were able to ask questions about the various careers and hear a variety of options for their futures.

Buzzer Beater for the CHAH Boys Basketball Team!

The CHAH Boys Basketball team won at home to put move their record to 9-3 overall (6-1 in PSAL play)

This win was especially exciting as CHAH won on a buzzer beater from Marcel Garcia. It was a true team effort as Delwyn Alcantrara started the play, Jacob Ramirez made the pass, Jhoasy Herrera set the vital pick, and Bruce Mata was key in spreading out the court.

As seen on the video, the crowd enjoyed the moment and was an important part of the victory!

Indiana Pacers NBA Assistant Coach Bill Bayno stopped by CHAH this week with his college teammate, and father of 2 CHAH students, Roger Younger. Coach Bayno has over 30 years of Division I and NBA coaching experience and has been an NBA coach for the Portland Trailblazers, Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers.

Bayno gave great advice to the CHAH basketball players, telling them to "love your teammates and treat officials with respect.”

Thanks for stopping by, Coach Bayno!

NY State Senator Jackson Visits CHAH

State Senator Elect Robert Jackson visited Community Health Academy of the Heights (CHAH) this week! As a member of the New York City Council, Jackson was instrumental in securing funding to open CHAH. After being greeted by Yvonne Stennett, Executive Director of Community League of the Heights (CLOTH), he was given a tour by CHAH's principal Mark House. Jackson went out of his way to introduce himself to students, staff, and the cafeteria workers during the tour and assure them that his first priority is to make certain that all public schools, particularly in New York City, receive their fair share of financial resources from the New York State government.

Jackson visited several classrooms and was very comfortable interacting with the students - he was seen bobbing his head "to the beat" in a dance class. He queried House about the systems in place at CHAH and their effectiveness. Jackson stated repeatedly that he was very impressed with CHAH's approach to responding to the academic and health needs of its students. All in all, Jackson's visit was an insightful and enjoyable one.
