 What is School Based Health Care (SBHC)? 

A SBHC is a full service pediatric clinic located at the school. Telehealth visits are also available. 

What is telehealth? 

Video visits (by phone, tablet or laptop) for primary care. 

What services are available to students who are enrolled with the clinic? 

  • Yearly physical exams (check-ups) 

  • Vaccines (shots) 

  • Hearing and vision testing 

  • Sports physicals 

  • “Working papers” physicals 

  • Lab testing - including for work/college 

  • Health education 

  • Behavioral health care - therapy and prescriptions 

  • Some referrals 

  • Some chronic (long-term) care management - asthma, diabetes, obesity - daily medicine, prescriptions, and refills

  • Help with signing up for health insurance

  • Sick visits and prescriptions 

What is a “sick visit?” 

During a “sick visit” students can be examined and diagnosed at school. Students may be sent home if they are really sick (with prescriptions to your pharmacy as needed). They can also be sent back to class if they are well enough and not contagious (will not spread illness). A sick student who is absent from school can have a telehealth visit. 

What about first aid and injuries that happen at school? 

All students will be seen for urgent matters. 

Does the clinic replace my child’s doctor? 

No. Your child’s doctor is still their main provider. The school clinic can work with your child’s doctor. 

Can a parent visit the clinic? 

Yes. Parents and guardians are welcome. 

Why should I enroll my student? 

There is no cost to you. We accept all insurances (no co-pays). People who are uninsured are welcome. 

It will save you time - no need to take time from work (or school) to go to doctor. 

Studies show that: 

  • Students enrolled in SBHC spend more time in school. 

  • Children who get primary care have better health. 

  • Children who spend more time in school and have better health have higher graduation rates and learn better. 

  • Mental health care at SBHC leads to having a higher GPA. 

SBHC staff are familiar with the school culture, administration, staff and students 

Who works at the clinic? 

  • Medical Director – a medical doctor who oversees all care provided. 

  • Nurse Practitioner - a licensed medical provider with advanced medical training in providing primary care. 

  • Registered Nurse - a traditional “school nurse” role who provides first aid and needed preventative care in the school community. 

  • Medical Assistant – a certified health care professional who does administrative and clinical tasks. 

  • Medical Office Specialist – a person who helps with sign up, scheduling, and insurance. 

How can I enroll my student? 

A parent or legal guardian must complete forms.
